MALTEPE

Maltepe which its population is 355.384 (2000),is neighbour with Kadıköy at the west,Umraniye and Kartal at the North,again Kartal at the east.It is 52  acre.

Maltepe’s history has been going until the Bizans Empire.It is said its name was “Bryas” or in Latin “Urias” in that ages.According to another information,it is “Pelekanon” in the Bizans’s history.Although it is being said by historians,Bryas was taken its name from the Bryas’s palace ruins which is near to the Akduman spring in Küçükyalı ,there is no certain evidence.

Because of this,today’s Maltepe was founded here in the 16.century.This district which was taken over for sometime by Kutalmışoğlu Süleyman Bey in the 11.century,afterwards  was lost again.

The district was conquered again by Orhan Gazi in 1329.In Maltepe which had a view like a small town in the Ottoman Period,a public building was made by Kazasker Feyzullah Efendi.Maltepe was an important military staying place in the Ottoman time.

Maltepe obtained a new face with developing further with the efforts of Kazasker Feyzullah Efendi in the 18.century.

Greeks were forming the majority of Maltepe population.But most of them left here with the result of exchange in the republic period.The first municipality organization of Maltepe materialized in 1928.

Maltepe became an independent county by separated Kartal in 1928,and in the same year in 1 November as the result of local elections Maltepe municipality was founded.Maltepe has been separated into 18 district as settlement place. These are; Bağlarbaşı, Feyzullah, Cevizli,Yalı,Başıbüyük, Büyükbakkalköy, Zümrütevler,Girne District (was separated from Zümrütevler in 1995), Esenkent, Altayçeşme, Gülensu, Gülsuyu, Küçükyalı Centre, Altıntepe, Aydınevler, Çınar, Fındıklı and Idealtepe.

The transportation in Maltepe is being made by highway and by railway.

The railway is the route which the old Maltepe has been founded in,under the E-5 highway in Maltepe.The highway(Ankara Asphalt) has been separating Maltepe to two parts.This road connects Maltepe to Anatolia,the secondaries connect to the next counties.The second important higway is the Bağdat street has been forming the route between Bostancı and Pendik.
