PENDIK

According to historical sources,Pendik is a settlement place since 5000 B.C.
Because of the district which takes part between the Bosphorus and Sakarya river changes hands frequently because of jeopolitic and jeostrategical characteristics,Pendik which is in this place also was taken over by different nations.

It is known that Makedons were in this district around 1200 B.C. and Rome Empire and after Bizans to be caught the sovereignty in the 8.century B.C.

The district which called as Pantikion or Pentikion in Bizans time,was today’s Pendik district.The oldest name known today is Pantikapion or Pantikapeum.
Pendik was being called as Panticio,Pantecio or Panticia in Rome time.

Pantecion (Pantiki) name which was used in Bizans time,means “surrounded with city walls”.Most of sources say, Pendik’s meaning is wall and the states which sovereigned to Istanbul use this place as a defence line to stop the attacks which come from the east.

According to some sources Pendik has the meaning like “Five Capes”.It is also said,the people who came and settled in this place from Ural mountains used the name as “Pench-deh”which means five villages in Persian language.

Pendik has an old history which goes to prehistory.Pendik which was cradled also to many civilization very before of Bizans,Rome and Ottoman periods,is an old settlement and resort place.
In the process of  Frigs to settle down in Anatolia and to found the Frig State,when they settled down in the place between the Bosphorus and Sakarya river,Bebriks which are a branch of Frigs called this place as Bebrikia.

Bitins which settled down here and named this place as Bitinia in 650 B.C.,accepted the Pers’s sovereignity that want to dominate the Anatolia in the middle of  6.century B.C.

Rome hardly passed  Bitinia to their sovereignity which  Pendik is also dependant in 74 B.C.,by arriving to Kalkhedon (Kadıköy) to Anatolia in 85 B.C.

General Belisarios lived in his villa which had it built in the Bizans sovereignity period.
Pendik became a resort place in the expeditions of Gots to Nikomedia (İzmir) and Persians to Kadıköy.
Pendik’s to meet with the Muslim armies happened in the expedition which armies in the command of Süfyan,advanced until Usküdar in 668 D.C.After the Malazgirt war (1071),the powers of Kutalmışoğlu Süleyman Shah who is cousin of Alparslan took over the district which is until Usküdar and became a boarder between the Bosphorus,Bizans and Türks.

But with the invasion of crusader in 1204,when Latin state founded in this district,Pendik also got its share from this demolition.

Pendik passed to the Ottoman management as a result of Samandıra and Aydos castle’s taking in the Orhan Bey period in 1328.Although the Anatolia side of Istanbul then passed to the Bizans management afew times,Pendik entered into the Ottoman’s sovereignty without changing hands with the conquest of Istanbul by Fatih Sultan Mehmet.

In the diggins made in Pendik,a columun with lonic style,many number of grave and castle bases built in Rome time.

Pendik was a village at first in the Ottoman managerial construction.It was a village settlement place which was dependant to the Uskudar flag’s ıslands district.Here is known in this term as a pretty settlement place which Greek,Armenian and Muslim elements lived together and was dealing with vegetable-fruit producing,fishing and olive producing more.

Pendik burned three times which the first one was in 1798.In the fire in 1889, 1200 house demolished.
After the 1. World War,Pendik took its share from the occupaion of the mutual states,Englishes founded a outpost near Büyükdere.The outpost was emptied with the occupation powers left Istanbul in 2 november 1923.
