NEIGHBOURHOOD BAZAARS

Nearly in all neighbourhoods of Istanbul there are neighbourhood bazaars which are called with the name of their place or the day they are set up in.In these bazaars which their roof open generally,a lot of workbench are being set up side by side and all kind of necessity materials are being sold from food to textile,from furniture to pat.
These bazaars are a share of an interesting riches with their sale methods,sellers,voices and idioms.

“Run,run,run……I made one and half…”In every people mind there are probably at least a few of   touts that sellers make for picking customers to sell their goods and the expressions which they formed with a big creativity.Some of us love bazaars because of we can find fresh vegetables and fruits but some of us complain because of them being crowded.But we absolutely visit the neighbourhood bazaars at least one-two times in a month.To go to bazaar is not just for shop and also is a tradition which comes from old times.We set out with the hope of finding the cheapest and the best of the products.

One of the oldest and  the most famous neighbourhood bazaars of Istanbul which is still active is the Salı Pazarı.This is the most important neighbourhood bazaar which is set up in the Anatolia side in Kadıköy and on the Kuşdili meadow on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Are the neighbourhood bazaars a unchangeable part of the city culture?.This opinion is still being discussed between  experts.According to some,these bazaars are the means which people can be  reached to organic fruit and vegetable.On the other hand,in spite of bazaars take an unregistration role,are also supplying the villagers to sell theirs products and continue to production.According to another view,neighbourhood bazaars are the bleeding wounds of the city.The traffic and cleanliness matters which bazaars causes are some point which cause suspicions.

A sixty years old lady is one of the people who is siezed to the magic of shop with feverish in the Kadıköy Salı Pazarı.The lady who is frequenter of this bazaar where the textile materials are sold in generally,is saying that,”We shopped from the bazaars  with official salary for years.Now,we are continuing to come to bazaars with the retired salary.There is a rumour like bazaars will be remove.If they are removed we dont have any place left to go to shop.”

We are starting to a conversation with a seller who sells tracksuit in Salı Pazarı where almost draw to the all kind of people.This man who opens workbench in Salı Pazarı for 25 years said that;”In this bazaar,there were alot of illegal materials formerly,original.If you could see who used to come.But now there are too many export spare products.Besides, Turkey have become the centre of textile”.This man is one of the the people who observes and lives  the rises and falls in the bazaar.”The bazaar became small in the 80th. years and growed in the 90th. years,nowadays is still small.Here was also the centre of the neighbour cities.Many number of busses lady groups used to come in all bazaar from Izmit and Bursa.Some part of them are still continuing to come.

19 years old young lady who is in front of the gift stand and trying to select one which is convenient,is from the youngs who doesnt love the bazaar.She says that;”generally youngs get bored of bazaar,I am just coming to help my mother thats all.Shopping centres are more attractive for youngs”.A father who come to help his son who has just started to seller,is thinking that the big shopping centres threaten the bazaars.The father is saying;”the real shopping culture of Istanbul is which in the bazaars.Only here,there is almost 150 years old bazaar culture.Bazaars are the nostalgias but nowadays  unfortunately the people is being tryed to be  kept  in the shopping centres”.His son is actually a civil engineer.They are stating to sell the good quality products with a convenient price and also says he prouds of sellers in bazaar.The man who is the owner of the stand next to,is complainant that the fabric materials which they sell being in the 18th. row from inside of 100 products in the economic conditions which  gets difficult.The first place is ofcourse belongs to vegetable and fruit.

In the parts of neighbourhood bazaars which have been separated for the  foods,the difficulties of the life struggle and sell the fresh products are being seen.Fortyfive  years old salesman,is bringing products to the Tarlabaşı bazaar.This man who has worked in bazaars since he was thirteen says that;”there is no break and rest in this job.We are bringing our products by loading  our pick up from the covered market place every week.This job has finesses.Firstly you shouldn’t bruised the product,you should watch for it like your child.It is wasted if it remain unsold after the bazaar.You should sell it cheaper if necessary,you don’t lose money.It became so many years but still difficult,very difficult”.

The sellers who stroll  almost to all  bazaars in Istanbul,are telling that they pay a rent between 50-75 new TL. for the places that they set the workbench up.The salesman who is experienced for fifteen years,is a supporter of the bazaar places being covered,with fixed workbench and special planned places.Someone who is fortytwo years old from the new salesmans says that;”Our intention is to sell the good product  cheaper.Formerly the seller in markets was a sector on its own.But nowadays the seller in markets are being made with obligation”.

It is not being seen possible that the neigbourhood bazaars which they have a ossified place in economy too,to be separated also from the public mass who don’t like the big shopping centres with the people who their buying capacity is low.It maybe an important step that the conditions of bazaars which are the elements of culture on their own make better.People don’t want to quit of the seller’s manner and go home without picking the fresh fruits with own hands.
Istanbul neighbourhood bazaars are very crowded and funny  with their colours,smells and slogans.

First Station Is Göztepe Monday Bazaar

We are begining to our nice travel with the bazaar which is set up in Göztepe on Mondays.The bazaar which is on the minibus road in Kadıköy and at the next street of the Göztepe Freedom Park is in position that was set up in a big street.In spite of its arrival being quite easy,not so crowded like the other bazaars.Its calmness,cheapness of the prices and merry trades are attracting our attention.Mostly fruits and vegetables are being sold.Tomatos,apricots,aubergines,melons and watermelons….Whatever we touch is so delicious and fresh like they have just picked from their branch.Furthermore their prices are’t so expensive.Fruits put up for sale between 50 kuruş-2,5 TL,vegetables are 1-3 TL.These are ofcourse the fixed prices which are on the products.And also if you bargain,the shopping become nicer.When you part 20 TL. budget average,you can cover your kitchen expense.If delicatessen products like cheese and olive in your list,then you must keep your expense higher.
Our travel is continuing in the bazaar.Mostly middle-aged women are attracting our attention.The dullness which is in the food part, is becoming active in the clothes part.(Although we see clothes,sock… workbenchs while we are walking around the fruit-vegetable workbenchs,they aren’t so effective.)In here  a little more young population is seen.Skirts,trousers,shirts,shoes,bags,hause accessories,kitchen accessories…..Clothes and also accessories are cheaper instead of the other bazaars.It is possible to find blouse 5 TL. and trouser 10 TL..In afew workbench swimsuit and bikini are being sold because of being summer season.Their prices were determined as 20 TL. approximately.But in this part,we can’t satisfy as much as the food part and we are leaving the bazaar by finishing  our approximately 1,5 hours long bazaar travel.

The Most Famous Bazaar Of Istanbul:Kadıköy Salı Bazaar

We are turning our course to Kadıköy again in Tuesday.This time the place where we will go is one of  the most famous bazaar of Istanbul,Kadıköy Salı Bazaar.We are taking way from the Kadıköy Square to the place where Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium in.It is possible to get into the bazaar from many place because of being set up in a wide area.We are begining to our walking from the part where clothes sell in.Here is so crowded that if you throw needle up it doesn’t fall down.
The density in the workbenchs which shoes, underwears and gift jewelleries are sold, is attracting our attention.Although the prices are like with the market,is rather rich in the viewpoint of sort.It is possible to find here whatever you want from trousers to slippers,from swimsuits to clothes,from gift jewellers to perfumes,from sheets to towels.The prices are nearly same in every workbench.Trousers and skirts between 10-20 TL.,shoes 10-25 TL.,gift jewelleries 3-5 TL.,underwears 3-10 TL.,house-made products are 3-40 TL.The interest is showed to the bikinies and swimsuits.

While  the marked products are finding buyers with the prices like 50 TL. and over,the others which are low qualities are being sold in bazaars between 10-15 TL.Moreover,one piece of bikini is being sold in a mad scramble with a comic price like 2,5 TL.
Bazaars aren’t limited with the clothes.In the parts that women show interest mostly,workbenchs which sell cosmetic products and perfumes.In this year the perfumes which look like a pen have been fashion because of being easy carrying,practical and cheapness.The Kadıköy Salı Bazaar also fit this fashion.Perfumes which sell outside 3 TL.each one,are being sold here 5 TL. for 3 pieces.

When we advance more in the bazaar, the products which are necessary for all houses are being met like bath,kitchen and cleanliness products,pileless carpets,doormats,quilting sets,sheets and house accessories.Furthermore with  the  opportunities that fitter prices then shops and with 3-6-9 installments  to the credit cards…As you see bazaars also fit the fashion of credit card.You can hear the words in many places like  “we accept credit card”.Although this situation  causes to start to forget the habit of bargaining,is also providing shopping opportunity in contentment and without carrying cash.

For buying quality things it is necassary to go early in the morning.Although it is said that the density is happining in the afternoon,the people who come early in the morning can find more kind of things and can have the chance to buy the bests.It is possible to meet every age of people in bazaars without discriminate like young and old.Some is coming only for walk,some is coming with planned what they will buy  days before.

The food part is not so active.Fruits,vegetables,dry foods,cheeses,olives,breakfast foods and etc…..But this part isn’t also seemed cheap as much as we hope.When we look the one weekly  kitchen expense,a basket which is full of fruits and vegetables is begining 30-40 TL.,if we add somethings from the delicatessen section it is begining 50-60 TL.In fact small bazaars are being preffered for the kitchen shopping.Some of them which are famous, are preffered in personal care and clothes.

Kadıköy Bazaar is not ending with walk.Appoximately 2000 tradesman are on duty.Because of this situation the movement which starts early in the  morning is continuing until the evening without losing  its speed.

Kadıköy Russian Bazaar

In the Russian Bazaar where is set up  in the place of Salı Bazaar on Sundays,many kind of cheap products are being sold like goods,house and kitchen tools,computer and car spare parts,fishing lines,old goods and old disks.
