UMRANIYE
Once upon a time,Umraniye was covered with forests.Everywhere was forest,tree and green.Everywhere was a part of paradise with brand green trees.Because the climate was in a convenient situation for the forest to grow. 

According to historical sources,Frigians were the first nation who settled down in Umraniye.Frigians who regarded  the pine tree as holy,had equiped the all land with pine forests from Küçük and Büyük Camlıca to Alemdağ and Kayışdağ.
In the following years,the places where Umraniye was in passed to the Rome’s and Bizans’s sovereignty.
Harun Reşit had come in front of Krizepolis (Usküdar) with his forces in 782.After he stayed here for a year,he had been beaten to the Bizans Empress Iren’s army and as a result of this he had been obliged to pay 70.000 golds every year.
Our county’s land had changed hands from time to time between Bizans and Ottomans forces.

The first state which gets the Anatolia a Türkish and moslem land was Danişments state.
Danişments leaked until the Bizans lands.They built a castle over Alemdağ.Sultan Turasan who was a friend of Danişment Gazi fighted in this castle alot of times and died here because of he couldn’t take assistance he expected from the Anatolia.

Selçukians had come until Izmir,had taken this city and made capital first.
Orhan Gazi who became Sultan in the Ottoman empire time,added this district into the Ottoman lands.It has been told the first name of our county is “Lonely Selvi”.

Here had been donated to Seyh Aziz Mahmut Hüdai by I.Ahmet who was the sultan of that time in the begining of the 17.century.The district where was dependant to Bulgurlu until the republic period,stayed as a town where was dependant to Usküdar as a property of this foundation. 
The reason of Umraniye to be named as Lonely Selvi(cypress) as first name is a few grave,afew Selvi tree and afew houses to be in the forest.

The first settlers had come  into  Umraniye  from Batum first then Yugoslavia and Bulgaria after the Balkans Wars.Because of this here was named as emigrant district for some time.

Umraniye where stayed as a village until 1960,received dense emigrations after it was announced as organize industry district.The municipality was founded in 1963 first.

Umraniye is an interesting sample of urbanization where its population increase fastest and become  urbanized,and also local and regional traditions to be kept exactly.
With the 1980 revolution the Umraniye Municipality was canceled and was changed to the department directorship which was dependant to Usküdar.In Umraniye where became a county in 1987,the first local election was made in 1989.

Today our district is a settlement place where bigger than many Anatolia city with 14 quarters and 650.000 population (the municipality population is 450.000).Here still has 6 district and 4 village.
It has 22000 hectares of settlement area.

Umraniye is a rich place about economic variety.It has been showing variation from small manufacture industry to ready-made clothes and to the production of spare part and wood.

THE MEANING OF UMRANIYE;
The umran word is Arabic.It means happiness and comfort in the folks.The real meaning is a place where progressed,developed and was worked on it for making better the life conditions.

In some sources;Umran 1-prosperity,to be developed and a place to be quite inhabited.
2-civilization,progress and comfort.
